The first Vocal Excellence Summer Workshop marked an important milestone for vocal and musical theatre training in Cyprus, bringing together a remarkable group of young performers, distinguished educators, and internationally experienced artists for an intensive week of training, mentorship, audition preparation, and performance. The workshop took place in Limassol, at the Lyra Music School premises in the last week of June.

Among the invited faculty was Dr. Aris Antoniades, who contributed to the program as a Music Director, educator, and jury member.

Among the invited faculty was Dr. Aris Antoniades, who contributed to the program with his background as an educator and jury member. Drawing on his experience in musical theatre, orchestral performance, conducting, composition, and professional production, Aris offered students a valuable perspective on the musical and practical demands of the stage. His participation was part of a broader program designed to give young performers direct access to the specialized training and professional insight often associated with major international performing arts centers.

Created by esteemed Cypriot tenor Andreas Aroditis, Vocal Excellence is setting a new standard for pre-university vocal training on the island. Designed for serious young classical and musical theatre singers, the program offers students focused, high-level preparation while firmly placing Cyprus within the wider conversation on musical theatre education and professional vocal development.

Aroditis brings to the program a wealth of international experience as a performer and educator. A graduate of The Juilliard School, where he studied on scholarship, he has performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall and has appeared in opera, musical theatre, and concert repertoire. His work as a teacher at the university level and through Vocal Excellence Academy has already supported many young singers in their artistic growth, and the creation of this summer intensive represents a significant step forward for structured vocal and audition training in Cyprus.

The strength of the program lay not only in its concept but in the breadth of its faculty. The workshop brought together coaches from different artistic disciplines, giving participants a rounded understanding of what it means to perform at a high level.

Kate Batter, vocal coach and founder of Sing Wimbledon, brought extensive experience from the world of vocal training and musical theatre. With more than 20 years of teaching experience, she has worked with singers of different ages and levels, from beginners to professionals preparing for auditions and performances. Her background as a West End vocal coach and qualified Vocal Health First Aider added an important technical and practical dimension to the program, helping students approach their voices with confidence, stamina, and care.

Acting coach Carolyn Michelle Smith offered students a powerful connection to the world of drama and screen performance. A Juilliard-trained actor and educator, Smith has worked across Broadway, television, and film, with credits including major productions and appearances in acclaimed series. Her presence at Vocal Excellence gave students the opportunity to explore acting, presence, text, intention, and authenticity — essential qualities for young performers preparing for musical theatre auditions, where storytelling is as important as vocal ability.

Soprano and vocal coach Ksenia Belolipetskaya contributed her expertise as a lyric coloratura soprano, performer, and educator. Known for her vocal agility, musical refinement, and stage presence, she brought a strong classical foundation to the workshop. Her work helped students connect vocal technique with artistry, encouraging them to develop not only accuracy and control, but also expressive depth and musical individuality.

Polina Panagiotou, choreographer, director, and performer, added an essential movement and stagecraft dimension to the program. A graduate of Marymount Manhattan College in New York, she has performed in important venues including Lincoln Center and the ancient theatre of Curium, and her work bridges international training with the Cypriot performing arts scene. Her contribution reminded students that musical theatre is never only about singing: it requires physical awareness, stage confidence, character, rhythm, and the ability to communicate through the whole body.

Choir director Emmeleia Pericleous brought another vital layer to the workshop through her work in choral training and ensemble musicianship. As a Cypriot musician, conductor, and educator based in France, she has been recognized for her work with young people and for her commitment to connecting musical education with cultural identity. Her contribution supported the students’ sense of ensemble, listening, blend, discipline, and collective musical responsibility — skills that are central to both classical singing and musical theatre performance.

Liana Thrassou, Alexander Technique teacher, offered students tools for physical freedom, balance, and awareness. Certified by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique after completing a three-year full-time training at The Constructive Teaching Center in London, she has been teaching in Cyprus since 2012. Her sessions helped participants understand the relationship between posture, breath, tension, movement, and vocal performance, encouraging healthier and more sustainable habits for young singers.

Within this distinguished faculty, Aris' contribution focused on the musical and collaborative realities of professional theatre. His masterclass introduced participants to the broader structure of a musical theatre production, explaining how performers interact with the conductor, music director, creative team, orchestra, and ensemble during rehearsals and performance.

A central focus of Aris' session was the essential skill of following the conductor. Students explored musical cues, breathing, tempo, cut-offs, fermatas, dynamics, and the importance of remaining alert and responsive in a live performance environment. For young singers preparing for auditions and future professional work, this offered a valuable introduction to the expectations of rehearsal rooms, orchestral settings, and staged productions.

Aris also coached a number of students in a public masterclass setting, working with them from the perspective of a Music Director. His coaching focused on musical communication, phrasing, rhythm, tempo, dramatic intention, and the relationship between singer and accompaniment. Rather than approaching each performance solely as a vocal exercise, the session encouraged students to think like complete performers: musically prepared, theatrically engaged, and aware of the art form's collaborative nature.

In addition to his teaching work, Aris served as a jury member for the students’ mock auditions. These auditions formed an important part of the Vocal Excellence experience, giving participants the opportunity to present their repertoire in a structured setting and receive feedback from professionals who understand what audition panels look for. This practical experience helped students build confidence, refine their presentations, and better understand the standards expected by universities, conservatoires, and professional training programs.

The week concluded with a final show, where students shared the results of their work with faculty, peers, and guests. Aris attended the performance, celebrating the progress, courage, and artistic development of the young participants.

The first Vocal Excellence Summer Workshop demonstrated what can happen when international-level training, committed mentorship, and local artistic vision come together. Under the leadership of Andreas Aroditis, and with the contribution of coaches including Kate Batter, Carolyn Michelle Smith, Ksenia Belolipetskaya, Polina Panagiotou, Emmeleia Pericleous, Liana Thrassou, and Dr. Aris Antoniades, the program offered students a rare and meaningful artistic experience.

Most importantly, Vocal Excellence placed young performers at the center of the process. Through vocal coaching, acting, movement, Alexander Technique, choral work, music direction, mock auditions, and performance, students were encouraged to grow not only as singers but as confident, expressive, disciplined, and informed artists.

With its first edition, Vocal Excellence has established itself as an important new initiative for Cyprus. It offers a clear vision for the future of musical theatre and vocal training on the island: one that is ambitious, international, practical, and deeply committed to the next generation of performers.

The program's organizational manager, Marisa Anastasiou, ensured that both students and faculty had a smooth, first-rate experience, and, following its great success, the second edition of the workshop is already being organized. For more information, check https://vocalexcellence.cy
